Aquila or Inverdoorn?

The two Big Five reserves within reach of Cape Town are both malaria-free and both in the Karoo. They suit different trips: one is built for day visitors, the other shines overnight.

Which is closer to Cape Town?

Aquila, by about half an hour: the reserve says just under two hours, while Inverdoorn says less than two and a half.

Aquila is reached on the N1 through the winelands and the Hex River Valley; Inverdoorn via the mountain passes to Ceres and on into the Tankwa Karoo. Both drives are scenic.

Which is better for a day trip?

Aquila: almost every Big Five day tour on Viator goes there, with early morning, afternoon, sunset and full-day departures.

That choice of departures, and the shorter drive, make Aquila the practical pick if you only have one day. You can choose a transport-only tour and pay the park charge on the day, or an all-inclusive tour.

Where are you more likely to see the Big Five?

Neither guarantees all five: both are fenced reserves, and leopards are rarely seen by day anywhere.

At Aquila, reviewers usually report four of the five, with the lions in their own section. An overnight stay at either reserve adds drives at dawn and dusk, when animals are most active. Read what you will really see.

What about cheetahs?

Go to Inverdoorn: its cheetah conservation project is part of the stay, and the 2-day trip includes a visit.

Do not book Aquila for cheetahs; one reviewer noted that cheetahs in a brochure were not on the reserve during their visit.
